The Brief

Project Overview

Giri Loka is a 115 m² residence exploring textured façade expression using Yellow Balau Timberclad and Wynstellar detailing.

Natural tonal variation had to remain intentional, not random.

Objective

The objective was to execute a controlled dark timber façade by delivering:

• Calibrated Yellow Balau tonal depth
• Stable cladding performance under tropical humidity
• Controlled grain variance without visual distortion
• Integration between exterior Timberclad and interior systems

This project demonstrated that expressive facades require engineered restraint.

The Constraints

Tonal Variance Control
Yellow Balau naturally varies in grain and density. The challenge was to preserve character while maintaining compositional balance.

Dark Finish Performance
Darkened timber surfaces absorb more heat and can amplify movement risk. Moisture and fixing strategy required precision.

Residential Exposure Conditions
Although private, the facade remains exposed to rainfall and humidity. Durability and ventilation detailing were essential.

Material Honesty vs Architectural Discipline
The design sought imperfection, but not inconsistency. Variation had to be intentional and controlled, not accidental.

The Engineering

Yellow Balau Timberclad System

Boards were selected for density and durability, then processed to achieve consistent deep tonal expression while preserving grain texture.

Controlled Tonal Distribution

Installation sequencing balanced shade variation across the facade to prevent clustering or visual imbalance.

Ventilated Cladding Assembly

Airflow gaps and concealed fixing intervals reduced expansion stress and improved long-term durability.

Interior System Integration

Wynstellar interior detailing aligned proportionally with exterior rhythm to maintain cohesion between facade and interior zones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question unanswered? Speak to our team.

Why use Yellow Balau for this façade?

Yellow Balau offers density and exterior durability suitable for tropical conditions. Its natural grain variation supports expressive surface character when sequenced carefully.

Does dark timber increase performance risk?

Darker surfaces absorb more heat, which can increase movement potential. Proper ventilation gaps, moisture calibration, and concealed fixing strategy are critical to maintain stability.

How do you control variation without losing authenticity?

Through deliberate sequencing during installation. Boards are arranged to balance tonal shifts and grain direction while maintaining spacing discipline and structural alignment.

Why is this project strategically important for Woodlam?

Giri Loka demonstrates Woodlam’s ability to execute expressive, non-uniform facades without sacrificing durability or precision. It validates engineering discipline behind architectural boldness.
