The Brief
Project Overview
AP House is a 356 m² residence using Jabon Glulam as the primary exposed structural system.
The challenge was preserving structural expression while maintaining dimensional stability in Jakarta’s humidity.
Objective
The objective was to validate exposed Glulam in residential architecture by delivering:
• Visible natural grain without staining alteration
• Structural spans completed within 1.5 months
• Stable load-bearing beams with controlled moisture content
• A family living core defined by structural clarity
This project reinforced timber as structure first, atmosphere second.

The Constraints
Natural Grain Preservation
The client required minimal modification to the wood’s original tone. Finishing had to protect without masking character.
Urban Residential Conditions
The structure had to be dimensioned for transport and installation within a dense West Jakarta context.
Attic Load and Span Management
The family room beneath the roof required careful load-path clarity to maintain openness without intermediate clutter.
Aesthetic Restraint
Exposed structure increases scrutiny. Any alignment deviation, surface inconsistency, or uneven finishing becomes immediately visible.

The Engineering
Jabon Glulam Structural Frame
Laminated beams provided structural consistency while preserving visible grain continuity.
Natural Tone Preservation
Protective finishes were specified to protect without altering timber tone. Surface treatment focused on durability, not visual modification.
Open Attic Structural Strategy
Beam sizing maintained roof stability while preserving openness in the family zone.
Prefabrication Sequencing Discipline
Members were prepared in advance to support efficient installation within the 1.5-month timeline.
The Products and Materials
The Results and Insights
Natural Expression Maintained
The visible glulam structure retained its original grain and tonal warmth, reinforcing authenticity.
Rapid Structural Completion Achieved
The 356 m² residence was structurally delivered within 1.5 months without compromising alignment or finish quality.
Family-Centred Spatial Clarity
The attic family room became the emotional anchor of the home, demonstrating how exposed structure can support intimacy rather than dominance.
Timelessness Through Restraint
AP House reinforced that engineered timber need not be visually overstated. Precision and calm detailing create longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Got a question unanswered? Speak to our team.
Why leave the glulam structure exposed?
Exposing the structure allows the natural grain and tone to define the atmosphere. When engineered and aligned properly, glulam can function as both structure and architectural expression.
How is natural tone preserved without compromising durability?
By using protective finishes that enhance rather than mask the wood. Surface treatment is calibrated to resist humidity and wear while retaining original colour depth.
How does glulam improve structural reliability compared to solid timber?
Glulam laminates multiple layers, reducing internal defects and improving load consistency. This increases predictability and dimensional stability.
Why is this project strategically important for Woodlam?
AP House demonstrates that engineered timber can remain honest and minimal. It strengthens Woodlam’s capability in exposed structural residential design within urban conditions.
